Revenge Of The Sith Review

There are spoilers.

The best part of the movie was that George Clooney wasn't in it. That's a huge plus. Any director who makes the decision not to have George Clooney in his movie is definitely on the right track. The worst part of the movie was the damn time code at the top of my screen. Tee hee.

All right, let's start with what I liked. The film looks great. The whole look of it is dramatically different than the last two. It's darker. More shadows. Much more interesting. Lucas isn't just showing off this time. He's created a world that has meaning and serves his story. The opening is fantastic. A major battle scene. Explosions. Twists and turns. It sucks you in the movie. But unfortunately it's all downhill from there. There are some bright spots, but not many.

The movie's an improvement over the last two -- and we all know that's not saying much -- but the middle is an episodic mess. It's filled with mindless action sequences, unbearably bad scenes between Anakin and Padme, and all that force-Yoda-mumbo jumbo that just leaves me cold. The end has some very strong moments and ties into Episode IV rather brilliantly: You see Obi Wan take Anakin's light sabre -- the one he'll eventually give Luke. Most impressive is how the set design and music slowly start to look and sound like the original Star Wars. Ewan McGregor does what he can with Lucas' stilted dialog, and the scenes between Palpatine and Anakin have their Faustian moments. But other than that, the movie, like it's two predecessors, is really nothing more than a melodrama, whereas the original three were not.

What saves Sith and it's two predecessors from a Matrix Revolutions-type disaster is Lucas' inexhaustible imagination. Anyone whose ever tried to create knows how hard it is to come up with anything original. And yet, Lucas creates creatures and machines and worlds that are magnificent. The screen is endlessly populated with a never ending supply of Lucas' brilliance as a creator of the most amazing things from nothing. When I watch Phantom Menace or Clones again, it won't be for any other reason than to get another peek at all the fascinating objects that prove Lucas is a genius and explains why his fans have acquitted his bad storytelling for years now.

That being said, Sith looks fake. But so does every other computer animated film. We're nowhere near realistic animation yet. What we have is way-cool animation. It's great to look at, but it looks fake. I never believed for a moment that Anakin and Obi Wan were dueling in a lava pool. It was cool. But it was fake. There. Someone finally said it. And Yoda looks silly in those fight scenes. Doesn't someone just need to say that as well? He looks absurd flying and zipping around with that light sabre. It would be like if that midget in Poltergeist suddenly pulled out nun chucks. I'm sorry, but I laughed in Clones, and I laughed here. L.A.M.E.

The politics of the film are nowhere near as bad as hyped, but what there is was not only obviously written to please the Michael Moore crowd, it was a betrayal of what the films originally stood for. When Obi Wan confronts Anakin -- whose now gone to the dark side -- Anakin says, "You're either with me, or my enemy." To which Obi Wan replies, "Only Sith's deal in absolutes." That's not only lousy dialog and an all-too obvious shot at Bush -- that takes you out of the movie -- it betrays the entire idea of good and evil the film's used to be  about. My memory may be wrong, but I seem to remember in the original trilogy Yoda and Obi Wan laying down some absolutes about flirting with the dark side and Luke's desire to seek good in his father.

And that's part of the problem with the new films. Lucas' value system is so corrupt he offers us no heroes. In Menace, Obi Wan and Qui Gon (?) meet Anakin. He's like nine years old and a slave to that purple flying thing. A slave. A slave! Do they liberate Anakin? No. Even though they could've done so easily. So, what do they do? They put a little boy in an unbelievably dangerous pod race. If he wins, he's free. If he loses, the Jedi leave him enslaved. What kind of horseshit is that? And even after Anakin wins his freedom the Jedi take him but leave his mother a slave! Those aren't heroes. Those are United Nations workers. In Sith, Anakin's loss of his mother has an impact on his turning to the dark side. I'd have turned against those girly Jedi creeps too. "Why the hell didn't you get my mother out, you wimpy little appeasers!" And how could Lucas not notice this? How could he not see that he compromised his heroes so badly that when Anakin turns you can kind of understand why. Honoring another culture's slavery is enabling evil. Are the Jedi like today's liberals? Only interested in freedom and Democracy for themselves? Dictator and tyrant appeasers? Not in the original trilogy they weren't.

But nothing shocks and disappoints me more than the fact that the same man who created the splendid and memorable Princess Leia was completely unwilling -- over several years and three movies -- to create one decent female character. We know he can do it. Leia was wonderful. But Natalie Portman's Padme is a joke. All she did was react for three films. She was passive and boring and dull. By far her worst moment comes in Sith when she pleads with Anakin to stop the war and negotiate with the enemy.You know, the Emperor. Good heavens, I about fell over. It was probably a Lucas political statement, but it not only made Padme look weak... Worse, it made her look naive and stupid.

And her death. What a waste. I can think of ten ways she could've died that might have added to the legacy of the six films, but Lucas couldn't think of one. She dies of a broken heart. She loses her will to live when Anakin crosses over. Oh, boo-friggin'-hoo. And screw the twins she's having -- Mommy's depressed and has got to go. Sorry, George but not only did your character suck, but the romance between them was so embarrassingly conceived and written that we never once believe she loved him enough to abandon her newborn children. An ultimately very selfish, weak, and pathetic act, by the way.

But if I could sum up the biggest problem with the last three films in just two words, they would be: Han Solo. The humor, the swagger, the romance, the cockiness, the unwillingness to take anything seriously -- that's been sorely missing in this saga. It's like the difference between the original Star Trek and The Next Generation. Not having Kirk made the Enterprise like that galaxy far far away without a Han Solo:  A much less interesting and thrilling place to be.  A great character like Solo covers a lot of bad movie making. And in Sith, Lucas needed all the cover he could muster.

The only part of "Sith" I truly enjoyed was the ending ... when it all came together. I liked Obi-Wan retrieving Anakin's light sabre. Now I know how it came to be in his possession before he gave it to Luke. I loved when the mask came down on Anakin's face. His first breath thorough the mask as Darth Vader gave me goose bumps.

So, I suffered through the vast majority of the movie just to see the last. I agree with Harry ... the love affair between Anakin and Padme was pathetic -- embarrassing. This episide needed a Han Solo. When I saw Chewbacca, I wanted to hear Han say, "Laugh it up, fuzzball!"

I actually liked the movie a lot - but that analysis hits the nail on the head in so many ways it's not even funny.

And yes, basically the first three movies were as black and white as you could get - which, ironically, what made them work so well... makes me wonder wtf Lucas was thinking when he made them, I can't believe he's any MORE liberal now than he was back then.

But then again just wtf ARE they thinking? Oddly enough Palpatine uses Moral Relativism, a liberal philosophy, as his reason for embracing the dark side (good is just a point of view), and then Lucas turns right around and puts those words in Obi Wans mouth (only a Sith deals in absolutes)....

...well okay, at least I know what the bad guys are thinking... what the hell are the Jedi thinking because apart from a bunch of cryptic sh*t coming out of Yoda's mouth I can't make heads or tails of it. We just take it on faith that Jedi are "Good"... whatever the hell that means, cause Lucas sure doesn't make that very clear.

And if they aren't "Good" - but truly nuetral, then why doesn't he come right out and say that. And in the end (if they are) isn't that devotion to Nuetrality an absolute in it's own right?

See it's all just mush. But that's generally the problem with liberals. Truth is the difference between Good and Evil is easy to spot - but they wanna think things to death.

Hi Harry- been reading since the Ohio "recounts." I am actually going to defend Lucas here on one point. I was also initially bothered by Padme's saying that the war was caused from a "failure to listen" and her asking Anakin to negotiate. But on second thought, it totally fits the context of her character. For a thousand years everything has been resolved through negotiating in the Senate. The Republic does not even have a standing army- just the glorified policemen known as Jedi. She's more a picture of someone not realizing that the situation has changed. This is Sept 10th thinking, akin to John Kerry and the MSM.
The novelization was ten times better, as it includes all the important-to-the-plot scenes that Lucas cut out of the middle in order to save time to sqeeze in more special effects. The author even has Yoda realize at the end that the Jedi were defeated because he failed- by training the Jedi to win the last war, instead of being willing to change and prepare them for what would be the next war. Surely this is a tip of the hat to Donald Rumsfeld, who has been pushing that very point for at least a decade.

This may be what I have read into the movie, and not what Lucas meant to say, but I think the Jedi lost BECAUSE there was no moral difference left between the Jedi and the Sith. Mace Windu was willing to kill Palpatine/Sidious rather than capture him. Obi Wan was more eager to cut off an arm than to Jedi mind trick his way out of a fight. Even in the 4-6 series, Yoda deceived and Obi Wan flat-out lied about Vader. Given the lack of grief Sidious appears to get from people on the destruction of the Jedi Temple, it's clear that the people have little love for the Jedi, probably because of their holier than thou attitude.

For someone who had become obsessed with results, Anakin is sensitive how the Jedi Order is abandoning its foundations to get results. When the Jedi act like the Sith, at least the Sith can defeat death (or so Sidious says) instead of "accepting" it like the Jedi do. As in all classic tragedies, the hero causes the very disaster he seeks to avoid, but (like the Greek tragedy) the viewer is expected to sympathize and be able to see where he probably would go down the same path.
