Dying Breed: Jews flee France, Barbarians at the Gates
You must go to Augean Stables and read all three parts, please
People are affolés, like the thirties. People are leaving. Especially the Jews. But if you try and make the parallel to the thirties, you get cut off. Your colleagues won’t talk to you, stop having you speak at colloquia.
In 2002, the cry was “Synagogue brulé, République en danger.” In 2006, it was“Ilan Halimi brulé, République en danger.”
It’s gotten worse. Before we had hope. We told ourselves, they’re unaware. If we can get them to look at this clearly, we can persuade them. Now we’ve persuaded them, and they do nothing.
The level of appeasement is depressing: every time the Muslims get angry, the French trip over themselves to calm their passions. It’s far worse now. I am losing hope for France.
Even the French communities in good neighborhoods, with fancy Kosher restaurants nearby, are feeling the cold wind blow.
Now, in market places, in schools, even when it doesn’t involve immigrants, Jew is used as an epithet. You can even call a Chinese “dirty Jew” if you want to insult him.[...]“Since 9-11, there’s been a notable change in the Muslim community. Before you rarely heard Arabic spoken. Now they speak it loudly, the mothers aggressively take over areas in parks and gardens. They started to pick up their heads and feel pride.”
“Over 9-11?”
“Yes, it gave them a sense of power.”At the fac, the political tensions are high, the attitude towards Jews violent. Zionists are the enemy. A few Jewish students went to a meeting on Palestine at one of the more radical campuses in Paris, Jussieu. The feral hatreds, the wild enthusiasm for Hamas, the loud consensus that Israel should not exist… one has a sense that the morally revolting behavior that Oriana Fallaci denounced in September 2001 is alive and well at the French fac. There are still enthusiasts of indiscriminate Arab aggression, people for whom the Palestinians are a chosen people whom one loves and from whom one demands no restraint. And in the rest of Europe, is it the same? Are global Jihadi forces welcomed and redoubled by the anti-Zionist left all over Europe? Can the continent survive such madness? hat tip Drea

Musa Al-Qarni: "The concept of jihad is a matter of faith and Islamic religious law, which lives in the mind of every Muslim on the face of this earth. The religious education we receive through our schools, through our religious jurisprudence, our thinking, and our tradition - jihad is part of this."
Meanwhile MAROOOOOOON of the day award goes to sexaholic Charlie Sheen here;
CHARLIE Sheen has joined the 9/11 gone-bonkers brigade. The "Two and a Half Men" star gave a bizarre interview on GGN Radio Network's conspiracy-minded
"The Alex Jones Show," in which he suggested that the federal government was covering up what "really" happened. "It seems to me like 19 amateurs with boxcutters taking over four commercial airliners and hitting 75 percent of their targets, that feels like a conspiracy theory. It raises a lot of questions," Sheen said. "A couple of years ago, it was severely unpopular to talk about any of this. It feels like from the people I talk to, and the research I've done and around my circles, it feels like the worm is turning." Sheen said the collapse of the Twin Towers looked like a "controlled demolition." The out-there actor also expressed his disbelief over how one of the planes hit the Pentagon. "Just show us how this particular plane pulled off these maneuvers . . . It is up to us to reveal the truth. It is up to us because we owe it to the families, we owe it to the victims, we owe it to everyone's life who was drastically altered, horrifically, that day and forever. We owe it to them to uncover what happened."

The Atlas Interview: Phyllis Chesler, "Daring Lover of the Truth"
Ex-left wing goddess, one time Muslim bride, anti-cultural relativist, and as Bat Ye'or called her "daring lover of the truth". I was unfamiliar with Phyllis Chesler until I heard her speak at The The Middle East & Academic Integrity on the American Campus Conference At Columbia University over a year ago. Her remarks blew me away and the more she revealed the louder she was heckled by Pro-Palestinian inciters in the room. Inciters, thugs - these fools had their phones play loud music, their walkie talkies go off , but Chesler never flinched, stumbled or faltered. She gave it right back and made sure her story was told. I subsequently have written about her numerous times and strongly recommend you review her extensive body of work. Brave, brilliant, and sagacious, I jumped at the chance to interview her.
in The Death of Feminism : What's Next in the Struggle for Women's Freedom, the level of anti-American and anti-Israeli propaganda and intolerance towards all those who do not kow-tow to it is fairly monumental on many feminist list-serv groups. If one does not believe that America "deserved" 9/11; if one does not view America as the true "terrorist"; if one does not believe that Arabs and Muslims are being persecuted in America for "racist" reasons; and if one does not simultaneously believe that the Jews are "imagining" or "exaggerating" anti-Semitism — then one is not welcome on such list-serv groups. In fact, I was literally "purged," Stalinist-style from one such group for my various pro-America and pro-Israel "Thought Crimes." It was a most instructive experience.
[...]"right" and "left" are no longer useful. I write about this at length in The Death of Feminism : What's Next in the Struggle for Women's Freedom. On the other hand, the "Left" is aggressively secular and anti-religious; considers pornography to be "protected" hate speech; considers prostitution and trafficking to be forms of "sex work" which should be de-criminalized or legalized; views paternal sole-custody of children as the feminist solution to the problems that mothers have when they juggle child care and career responsibilities; believes that men and women are actually the "same"; has absolutely no foreign policy except that of opposing whatever President Bush and America do or ever have done — they really might as well be French; and has no universal feminist policy vis-à-vis jihadic Islam and its Muslim victims. The "right" has opposite views on these subjects. Although some "right-wingers" have diverse views on abortion, civil rights for gay people, the role of multi-national corporations in a time of war, the importance of intellectual and ideological diversity; the dangers of appeasing the Islam, etc. there are few "left wingers" who are at all diverse on their issues.
Brave, brilliant, and sagacious, I jumped at the chance to interview her.

Babies, Bigotry and 9/11
The ugly wave of anti-Arab feelings immediately after Sept. 11, 2001, may have been responsible for a sharp increase in the incidence of premature and low-birth-weight babies born to women of Arab descent in the United States in the months that followed the terrorist attacks
And they wonder why they are becoming increasingly irrelevant?
And this lefty wing counter intuituve jewel from Larry Elder here;
In February, our economy created 243,000 new jobs.
Yet one of our major newspapers tells us almost half of Americans consider the economy in a recession. American Research Group's latest monthly survey found 59 percent of Americans rate the economy as bad, very bad, or terrible. Why are Americans so negative?
Because the Mainstream media is clubbing the American people to death with that lie for years now.
Compare the first few paragraphs of this particular story by Investors Business Daily to the way the New York Times [shocka!- Atlas] reported the story.
Investors Business Daily, paragraph 1: "U.S. companies in nearly every sector increased hiring last month, lifting job growth to better than forecast levels and enticing more people into the labor market."
New York Times, paragraph 1: "American employers added 243,000 jobs in February and workers posted their highest salary gains in more than four years, the government reported yesterday, igniting concerns among many Wall Street economists that higher wages could fuel inflation and increase expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates further." [Emphasis added.]
Note the New York Times felt compelled to add a "but" or a "cautionary note" to the economic expansion. Someone made a decision to add a cautionary note, not that the proviso is wrong, or necessarily inappropriate, but it absolutely changes the tone of the story. But couldn't one also accuse Investors Business Daily of failing to provide balance by omitting this cautionary note?
No, for America's economy, by virtually any standard, remains an incredible economic powerhouse. Read it all Hat tip Paul T
As Canadians under the Liberals didn't accept to go to war, we have to count on other countries to free our own hostages today.
In case you missed it, the Lefist-Media is distorting the truth again. The hostages were not released, nor freed.
They were rescued. Big difference. The media refuses to report any good the US military does. The US captured an insurgent and forced him to say where the captives were. US and Brits raided the place. The insurgents did not have guards at the time, so the Allies rescued the prisoners without a shot being fired.
One of the ironies the media won't report is that these anti-war Leftists were freed by the very people who they were protesting against.

Wal-Mart - Bad! Crack Cocaine - Good!
"I think it's obvious what people would like, if they have a choice between a dilapidated, crack-infested old building with no jobs versus a thriving retail box with supporting retail shops, providing jobs and services and improving the property value," he said. "I think it's a no-brainer."
Ya think?
From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
"Wal-Mart gets a warm welcome"
Wal-Mart may be unwanted in other parts of metro Atlanta but south DeKalb County is rolling out the welcome mat.
Community leaders and residents will be on hand today when Wal-Mart celebrates the grand opening of its first store inside the Perimeter .
The 214,000-square-foot supercenter could help revitalize an economically depressed area and provide much-needed jobs.
"It's a good shot in the arm for the community," said John Evans, a community activist and former president of the DeKalb NAACP. "We needed development there. It may serve as a real catalyst to bring in new businesses."
Everything the left stands for is so counter intuitive, it makes my brain hurt.

Volokh Takes The Neocon to Task on Harvard Culpability in Walt-Gate
Funny little blogbit here
UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh takes the Neocon to task for the recent post “Harvard Running From its Own Dean’s Report”. Volokh, whom I have known for years and have the highest respect for, does not disagree with the Neocon’s analysis of Mr. Stephen Walt’s paper, however, he strongly disagrees with my assessment of Harvard’s culpability in the matter as an institution. The Neocon must bow to Professor Volokh’s Superior knowledge in this area, although I do put up a good fight. Here is the exchange.
Joe over at Neocon sent me this exchange to which I replied;
Joe, you are an animal.
And frankly, respect reshmect (!) Mr. V is splitting hairs and citing "insider trade knowledge" when in fact the world at large is attributing that report to Harvard.

RICHARD
BEESTON: BRITAIN PUSHES FOR MILITARY OPTION TO RESTRAIN TEHRAN
I
quite agree..............
BRITAIN is pressing for a United Nations resolution that would open the way for punitive sanctions and even the use of force if Iran were to refuse to halt its controversial nuclear programme.
In a confidential letter obtained by The Times, a leading British diplomat outlines a strategy for winning Russian and Chinese support by early summer for a so-called Chapter VII resolution demanding that Iran cease its nuclear activities.
If the Government in Tehran refused to comply with such a resolution, the UN Security Council would be legally compelled to enforce it.
The strategy marks a significant hardening of the Government’s position.

Sudan: Where the Hell is Nato?
The Wall Street Journal got a couple of things wrong in their Oped piece Wednesday on Sudan;
At places like Davos and Harvard, the world's elite rarely stop fretting about the dangers of a too powerful America. Well, if you want to know what the world looks like without U.S. leadership, Exhibit A is Darfur in Sudan.
Today's leading authority on Darfur is the political philosopher Thomas Hobbes, who prophesied a world "nasty, brutish and short." At least 200,000 civilians have been killed in the last three years and two million more have become refugees. The source of the problem are the Arab rulers in Khartoum, who have pursued an ethnic cleansing campaign against black Muslims in western Sudan. They've equipped the Janjaweed Arab tribesmen to do the dirty work, and that militia is now attacking civilians across the border in Chad, creating 20,000 more refugees.
According to Manute Bol and Simon Deng, both of whom I personally interviewed here and here, and more here said it is not the Janjaweed tribesmen but a jihad by the Radical Islamic government. Radical Islamists, Arab against Arab, Radical killing Moderate Muslims. It's government soldiers given "vacation time" to rape, murder. enslave. "It is a jihad "- Atlas
To his credit, Kofi Annan started shouting about the problem two years ago, and former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell labeled it "genocide" not long after that.
Again, this is just plain wrong. All of those ex slaves at the Freedom Rally and particularly Deng and Bol had nothing but the worst things to say about Kofi Annan. They said he did nothing for them. Failed them miserably, an African man passive about African genocide -Atlas
The U.N.'s mighty peace-making machinery then started to roll and . . . nothing. The Chinese (who have close commercial [oil] ties to Khartoum) and Russians have blocked any serious intervention. Arab members of the Security Council have also opposed any attempt to single out Khartoum. Read the rest.
The UN can't find its sorry ass with both hands. BASTA! Enough murder, rape and slavery. SEND NATO. It's Hades down there, damn it.

Saddam: 46,000 Boxes to Go
The WeeklyStandard's Stephen Hayes is mining the Iraqi docs and finding huge stories. Hayes is also keeping track of others' efforts, including an important piece from Foreign Affairs about which hayes writes:
A new and highly illuminating article in Foreign Affairs draws on hundreds of Iraqi documents to provide a look at the Iraq war from the Iraqi perspective. The picture that emerges is that of an Iraqi regime built on a foundation of paranoia and lies and eager to attack its perceived enemies, internal and external. This paragraph is notable:
The Saddam Fedayeen also took part in the regime's domestic terrorism operations and planned for attacks throughout Europe and the Middle East. In a document dated May 1999, Saddam's older son, Uday, ordered preparations for "special operations, assassinations, and bombings, for the centers and traitor symbols in London, Iran and the self-ruled areas [Kurdistan]." Preparations for "Blessed July," a regime-directed wave of "martyrdom" operations against targets in the West, were well under way at the time of the coalition invasion
Think about that last sentence.
The documents are painting an undeniable picture of a regime evil beyond comprehension. As Robert Kaplan has explained on my show, the Stalinist horror built by Saddam would never have "evolved," would never have moderated, would eventually have attacked us, and perhaps sooner than any of us imagined.
Keep checking back to the Weekly Standard's website.
And over at the mothership Pajama Media;

It's hard to feel sorry for these suicidal maroons. French politicians subsidize Islamist Groups, Story here, France-Echos : le blog in English via Warblog
French elected representatives have, in their pitiful run for votes, made
subsidies available for declared enemies of the French Republic through associations, radio stations or “school support” groups.
The beneficiaries of those generous gifts are people as despicable as Hassan Iquioussen, the anti-Jew preacher from UIOF [Union des organisations islamiques de France - Union of Muslim Associations in France], Tariq Ramadan, the takia-expert who wants to impose Sharia to French Muslims, the notorious “Indigènes de la République” association [”Natives of the Republic”, “Natives” meaning here former colonized people, i.e. mainly of African or Arab descent] and their call for racist Jihad against people of French descent, or “school support” groups that form real Koranic Madrassas.

The new, much more prominent disclaimer reads:
The two authors of this Working Paper are solely responsible for the views expressed in it. As academic institutions, Harvard University and the University of Chicago do not take positions on the scholarship of individual faculty, and this article should not be interpreted or portrayed as reflecting the official position of either institution.
It is especially notable that while the original disclaimer merely stated that Harvard did not necessarily share the views expressed in the article, the revised disclaimer goes much further, stating that:
2. This article should not be interpreted or portrayed as reflecting the official position of either institution [Harvard or Univ. of Chicago].
3. The institutions take no position on the "scholarship of individual faculty."
As both universities, in fact, routinely take positions on the "scholarship" of faculty members -- regarding tenure, hiring, salaries and so on -- the addition of wording apparently distancing the universities from the document's "scholarship" suggests a devastating vote of no confidence by Harvard and the University of Chicago in the work of Professors Walt and Mearsheimer.

The report co-authored by University of Chicago Professor Mearsheimer should be a deep embarrassment to the University of Chicago . NEW YORK New York Times Co., the third-largest U.S. newspaper publisher, warned Wednesday that its first-quarter profit would fall short of analysts' expectations and said it may have to write down the value of an investment.
First-quarter earnings are expected to fall to a range of 22 cents to 24 cents a share, the company said, below expectations of 25 cents. The forecast is also sharply below the 76 cents a share earned a year ago, thanks to the sale of real estate assets.
The owner of The New York Times and the International Herald Tribune also said it may reduce the value of an unnamed joint-venture equity holding, which could pare first-quarter earnings further. (Bloomberg, Reuters)

Iran Close To Nuclear Fuel Cycle
During the question and answer portion of John Bolton's appearance before the Middle East Forum earlier today, I was tempted to ask when would we say uncle. At what point would America stop the circle jerk with Eurabia and Iran nuclear enablers Russia and China and take preemptive action in Iran.
I didn't. And the reason I didn't was because I knew he wouldn't/couldn't tell me.
Russia and China block UN statement on Iran's nuclear program
Diplomatic Option Rapidly Fading, Iran Completes 164-Centrifuge Cascade
BREAKING NEWS:
Vital Perspective's sources say that Iran has moved significantly closer to full self-sufficiency in operating a fuel cycle. The IAEA has made it known that Iran has completed the construction of a 164-centrifuge cascade, the minimum necessary for full-scale nuclear-fuel enrichment. While the stalemate in the Security Council continues as a result of Russia's stalling, Iran is moving dangerously closer to the technological point of no return.
UPDATE: China and Russia Unite in Anti-American Stance During Putin’s Beijing Visit
One Time Communist Rivals Attack Policies of American National Security Strategy; Talk of Oil Pipeline RICHARD SPENCER — The Daily Telegraph
BEIJING — Russia and China marked the arrival of President Putin on a state visit to Beijing yesterday by launching twin attacks on American foreign policy, in a sign of the growing ties between the two former communist rivals.
Both leaders responded strongly to the American condemnation of their human rights. America has criticized Russia for hampering democratic development at home and in former Soviet States, and China for its lack of transparency in military spending and its ties to countries with poor human rights records.
As China emerges from the era when it kept diplomatic silence on most world events, it is increasingly finding itself in the same camp as Russia.
The European Union has also been disappointed at the joint refusal of Russia and China to join in what it sees as its “middle way” approach to the Iran nuclear issue, with both refusing to countenance the threat of sanctions at the U.N. Security Council. Both have major interests in Iran, and the two countries are thought to coordinate their responses on Middle East policy.
The two powers also have taken a joint initiative to set up a grouping of Central Asian states such as Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, where America had hoped to boost its influence, called the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Call me crazy, but if we are waiting on these two sinister members of the Perm 5 (of the Security Council) to assist in the cessation efforts of Iran's nuclear weapon proliferation, I am afraid we are sadly, greatly, mistaken.

David Horowitz vs. Ward Churchill: Young America's Foundation Sponsors Academia's Royal Rumble
HERNDON, Va--.Embattled Professor Ward Churchill has agreed to engage bestselling author and sought after speaker David Horowitz in a series of formal debates organized by Young America's Foundation and Students for Academic Freedom. The series of debates will kick off at George Washington University in Washington D.C. on April 6 in the Continental Ballroom with the other campus locations yet to be announced.
Churchill gained infamy for referring to the victims of September 11th as "little Eichmanns." Horowitz gained notoriety for his long-standing commitment to protecting the academic rights of students. He recently authored The Professors, an expose of 101 radical professors representing leftist bias present in higher education today.
This will make Hitchens/Galloway mere child's play.

Lego complains about UN anti-racism poster
Danish toy maker Lego today said it felt wrongly accused of being racist by a UN anti-discrimination poster showing what looked like one of the company’s famous
building blocks.
The poster reads “Racism takes many shapes” and shows the picture of a jigsaw puzzle next to a red brick.
It was launched by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
“We feel that the message of this poster can be interpreted as if we are a racist company,” Lego spokeswoman Charlotte Simonsen said in Copenhagen.

UPDATE 3/22/06: It appears likely that Europe will be the next major battleground in the Long War.
The Jihadis, following public humiliation on their own home ground, will need a means of proving that they’re still in the game, and Europe is vulnerable. It abuts directly against ancient Muslim homelands at several points, has a substantial and unintegrated Muslim population, has offered active Jihadis sanctuary within its borders, has pursued reckless immigration and security policies, and has supped with the Devil through its open support of Saddam Hussein (paid for with Iraqi oil funds) and Muslim terror organizations such as Al Fatah and Hamas.
Many observers believe it’s already too late, that Europe is one with Sumeria and Byzantium, that all that remains is the funeral procession. They point to the numbers of native births – below replacement level of 2.1 children per couple in almost every country—compared to those of Muslim immigrants, which are two to three times higher, and echo Bernard Lewis’s now-famous prediction, “Europe will be Muslim by the end of the century.”
Europe in also unfortunate in that its overall government, the European Union, has established itself, in defiance of the experience of the past century, as the kind of managerial superstate proven unfeasible just about everywhere else on earth.
Palestinian/Al Qaeda Plot foiled In Israel
Israel charges Palestinians with Qaeda attack plot
JERUSALEM, March 21 (Reuters) - An Israeli military court charged two Palestinians on Tuesday with membership of al Qaeda and plotting a suicide bombing and car bomb attack for the group.
Charge sheets published by the Israeli military spokesman said Azzam Abu-Alades and Balal Hafanawi, both 19 and from the Nablus area of the occupied West Bank, were recruited to al Qaeda last year in Jordan. Both were charged by a military tribunal in the West Bank with conspiring to commit murder, membership of an illegal group, illegal possession of weapons and military training with al Qaeda.
The charges say they had plotted a suicide bombing at a pizzeria in a Jewish neighbourhood in Jerusalem to be followed by a car bomb shortly afterwards. They are also accused of recruiting potential suicide bombers to carry out the attacks.
A terrorist by any other name (al qaeda, Hamas, Hizbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, whichever hat they choose that day) is still as evil. Connect the dots. This is one large global war on Islamofascism.
Bush Says United States Will Defend Israel
President Bush on Monday reaffirmed the
United States' vow to defend Israel against attacks from Iran, which is pursuing
nuclear arms and has threatened to destroy the Jewish state . "The threat from
Iran is, of course, their stated objective to destroy our strong ally Israel,"
Bush said to an audience in Cleveland. "It's a
threat to world peace; it's a threat, in essence, to a strong alliance. I
made it clear, I'll make it clear again, that we will use military might to
protect our ally, Israel." The U.N. Security Council is now considering how to
stop Iran's quest for atomic weapons. Meanwhile, Congress is considering the
Iran Freedom Support Act, legislation that would tighten American sanctions on
Iran to choke off funds it could use for atomic work. Urge
your lawmakers to support this legislation.
Thank Gawd ,the President gets it. Israel is, lke Iraq, like the Cartoon jihad, like Thailand, etc. is another front, another "campaign" - a critical and strategic one albeit, in the war waged on the West by Islamofascists.
Bolton's Remarks at today's MEF Lunch
The main thrust of Bolton's speech (followed by a Q&A) was to speak to three specific issues where the UN has been involved in the Middle East, and the ups and downs of UN activity.
The short answer to whether the UN can be effective in the Middle East is "it depends. It depends on the circumstances."
First Issue: Syria out of Lebanon
Bolton spoke first and in great detail "finally extracting Lebanon from the grip of Syria." This phenomenon we've witnessed for decades to the point where basically we've all gotten used to it." "Not to date myself or anything but my first recollection of Lebanon was Eisenhower sending troops in in 1958."He goes on, "through the decades the situation got completely out of hand. For a number of years we have not a Lebanon functioning as an independent state."
Due to a confluence of events not the least of "which the United
States and France, the reestablishment of a French American working
relationship on the subject, the Syrian assassination of the former Lebanese
prime Minister Hariri, which caused an international outcry, and frankly the
work that we've been doing over a sustained period of time to explain to other
friends and allies the pernicious role that Syria has played in the region as a
whole, fostering or at least permitting the flow Of terrorist finance, weapons
and personnel into Iraq where they took action against American and other
coalition forces, their continuing harboring of terrorist groups like Hamas,
Hizbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Damascus.....their continued efforts,
serious continued efforts in weapons of mass destruction and finance of
conventional weapon systems that threaten Israel and our forces in the
region."
All of these things combined in getting the necessary support on the
Security Council to pass resolution 1559, ordering the complete withdrawal of
Syria from Lebanon....and to address the manifold ways Syria exercises control
over the Lebanese government.
"We know Syrian intelligence services are still present in Lebanon, still threatening people in Lebanon, the government of Lebanon."
More to come, gotta run
Second issue: On the UN and Iraq
"I just last week gave a quarterly report to the Security Council on behalf of the coalition forces describing the security situation there, urging again greater UN involvement , this is not something we are resisting in the Bush administration, quite the contrary, we would like and more importantly the government of the new Iraq would like additional UN participation.
We understand the UN was shocked and saddened, as we all were, at the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad that killed Sergio Vieira de Mello, Secretary General special representative- I knew Mello quite well from Bush 41, I had a lot of respect for him, he'd undertaken a very courageous mission as were all the UN personnel there and it's entirely understandable from a human perspective why the UN was saddened and hurt by this terrorist attack.
You might have noticed there are a lot of terrorist attacks in Iraq, it's a battlefield in the war on terrorism, our colleagues our fellow Americans who are out there whether military or civilian are all at risk, so are the Iraqis. So are the Iraqis who are trying to build a stable and democratic society for themselves, so are all the non governmental organization personnel who are providing assistance, humanitarian and other ways. We are prepared to provide whatever protection is needed for additional UN involvement. We think it beneficial for the country, we are prepared to assist.
So let there be no misunderstanding on this point. This is a case where the UN could take a society which had been ruled by a dictatorship for decades, where the people yearn for the chance to have a free and safer existence. The UN could be playing a much larger role and it's not because we're resisting, quite the contrary, we're urging it as strongly as we can and this is something we wish the other governments were lobbying the Secretary as hard as we are.
[In other words, Kofi and co. are pussies. They are happy to steal, cheat, embezzle from the poor in Iraq but when they are really needed? When they could really be useful, effective and make a difference? They turned tail and ran, and they are still running -Atlas]
Third (and most pressing) issue: Iran's Clandestine Nuclear Weapons program
"The administration has been concerned right from the outset. One of the things we tried to do at the beginning of the administration was create a new strategic framework between the United States and Russia." One which we made a lot of progress. We eliminated the unnecessary in fact harmful 1972 anti ballistic missile treaty to free up the US to create and develop missile defenses against launches by rogue states."
[..] 2/3 reduction strategic warheads. We had considerable success with the Russians on the strategic offense and defensive side. Where we have not had success reflected again even in recent days is in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and in particular nuclear weapons, Iran being the perfect case study.
We have pursued a peaceful and diplomatic course against Iran's nuclear weapons program for 3 1/2 years with IAEA . It's been our view during the entire period of time that Iran's program clearly violates the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. That program constitutes a threat to international peace and security, it belongs in the Security Council, it's now there. Long overdue in our view but there with the support with the EU countries and indeed the IAEA and both Russia and China as well.
It's now been two weeks since the exploration of the agreement of the foreign ministers of the five permanent members agreed in London in January that they would refer Iran to the security council and we would wait a month to allow the IAEA to meet one more time and then we would take action in the Security Council. Two weeks since that brief hiatus and in two weeks we have found we are once again at loggerheads among the five permanent members about what we are going to do on this subject.
We believe that Iran should be told in
unmistakable terms that it should comply with nearly a dozen IAEA resolutions
that have called on it to suspend its uranium enrichment program. To get out of
the business of trying to have a completely indigenous capacity in the nuclear
fuel cycle. We have supported incredibly generous offers by the EU3 (England,
France, and Germany) and by Russia that would provide nuclear fuel for its
so0called civilian nuclear reactors.
The Iranians have rejected all of
these offers. They have said there is no way
they are going to accept any circumstance other than that can enrich uranium
domestically.
We are now at a testing time in the Security
Council.
During the Cold war the Security Council was largely irrelevant
to the great struggle between freedom and communism. It was blocked by the
Soviet Union and communist China when they were admitted.
This test to
the Security Council now is whether it will be relevant to the greatest threat
we face today. The threat of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass
destruction. Even worst of all, the confluence of those two, terrorists getting
weapons of mass destruction

The paper has won praise from anti-Semite and white supremacist David Duke, is being distributed by the Palestine Liberation Organization’s mission to Washington, and has been lauded by a senior member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization.
Less thrilled with the Harvard dean’s work is one of his colleagues, Marvin Kalb, a lecturer in public policy at the Kennedy School and a senior fellow and founding director at the school’s Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy.“I do not regard this as a Kennedy School Research Paper, because it clearly does not meet the academic standards of a Kennedy School research paper,” Mr. Kalb, who is also the faculty chair for the Kennedy School’s Washington programs, told The New York Sun in an e-mail yesterday after reading the paper. “It is a rather sensational example of ‘realist’ journalism,” he continued. “My sense is that Dean Walt would be better advised to stick to scholarship and leave journalism to journalists, who generally check their ‘facts’ before publishing them.”
Now I ask you, look at the brain trust and ask yourself, who would I want on my team?

Let Freedom Ring
Those of you that know me, know I split my time between the water and the city. When I am out on the island, the only thing on my screen on news, news and Cspan(s). Chuck Dolan, that tiny little man - owner of Long Island Cablevision - doesn't carry great old movie channels. Dolan singlehadnedly undermined the building of a sports stadium here in Manhattan (would have hurt his Madison Square Garden, but that for another day.) Oedipus at the Garden, as if a bloody battle with the mayor wasn’t bad enough, Cablevision scion James Dolan (Chuckie's son) is now locked in a wrenching power struggle with his father. Whatever.
Anyway I got in late after doing an interview with Mike and Aaron over at PaPundits (Santorum country, lucky for them), for a podcast to be uploaded shortly. Excellent men both and it was a wildy interesting blogchat, I'll let you know when they post it. I shall say little else and let the interview speak for itself.
Anyway when I hit Gotham, imagine my delight when I tuned into TMC - Turner
(how ironic that that mad left wing small screen mogul would own the best of the
golden age in Hollywood) -
Turner Movie Classics was showing "Let Freedom Ring" - 1939
Lionel Barrymore, Edward, Arnold, Charles Butterworth - classic. What a hoot!
"Let Freedom Ring is an undeservedly little-known "patriotic western" with comedy and, of course, music, written by veteran screenwriter Ben Hecht and featuring practically every character actor in Hollywood at the time (Victor McLaglen in a hilarious performance, Charles Butterworth ditto, the wonderful Edward Arnold, Lionel Barrymore, Raymond Walburn, Guy Kibbee, Gabby Hayes, H. B. Warner, Louis Jean Heydt) and the lovely and gentle Virginia Bruce as leading lady.
I came in on the closing speeches -- it was the opposite of everything being espoused today. Fighting for freedom, don't tread on me, the greatness of America....the whole nine yards. So great. It seems impossible that that Hollywood spawned modern day Hollywood where Vanessa Redgrave is negotiating to play Cindy Sheehan. The mind reels.
Dhimmitude: Media's Silence on Increasing Muslim Violence
John Leo's brutally honest OpEd on INCREASING MUSLIM VIOLENCE IN EUROPE NOT BEING REPORTED here ;
Like many news junkies, I've noticed that stories putting Muslims in a bad light tend to be sketchy and underreported. A minor example is this comment by the head Muslim chaplain of New York City's prisons: "The greatest terrorists in the world occupy the White House." In Manhattan, remarks like that are nearly as conventional as talk about the weather, so the controversy was fairly small.
It might have been larger if the media had shown any interest in other points the imam made. For instance that Muslim prisoners are being tortured in Manhattan, and that Muslims must be "hard against the kaffir" (i.e., nasty to infidels), which presumably city employees are not paid to recommend. (By the way, why are clergymen city employees at all?)
A much bigger example is the misleadingly low-key reporting of the Ilan Halimi murder in Paris. We now know that Halimi was killed as a classic expression of Jew hatred. But with so much evasiveness and misdirection by police, government and press, it took a month to get that fact clearly on the table. Halimi, a cell phone salesman, was kidnapped and held for ransom by a mostly Muslim gang. He was horrifically tortured for three weeks, then slain. From time to time, neighbors had come to watch the torture or to participate in it. Nobody called the gendarmes.
At first the government and the press presented this story as a straightforward kidnapping for ransom. A spokesman said Jewishness may have played a role simply because the kidnappers thought Jews were rich. AP and UPI, in feeds to the United States, barely mentioned the possibility of anti-Semitism. After arrests were made, the BBC worked hard to avoid using the word "Muslim," though verses from the Quran were recited during the torture.
The Los Angeles Times account of Feb. 28 shows how hard candor can be. It reported that the gang made hundreds of abusive phone calls to Jews and had systematically tried to kidnap Jews. But the reporters wrote this: "Rather than a premeditated anti-Semitic murder, it seems a more complex product of criminality and dysfunction in the narrow world of thug culture: a poisonous mentality that designates Jews as enemies along with other faces of 'outsiders.'"
Oh, please. If whites had tortured and killed a black man, I doubt that reporters would be carrying on about how complex and unpremeditated it all was. They would just say it was a lynching.
In an excellent article last week, Colin Nickerson of The Boston Globe said the crime was being attributed to a "predominantly Muslim youth gang" notorious for "virulent anti-Semitism." The gang's taunting phone calls to Halimi's father were filled with anti-Semitic slurs and a rabbi had been told, "We have a Jew." The Globe said hatred of Jews is now a hallmark of what's cool in France, even among young immigrants from non-Muslim nations. Very strong article. No dancing around, just good reporting.
Governments and the media often avoid calling terrorism by its proper name. Presumably the idea is to calm the public and avoid embarrassing Muslims. It took nine months for the FBI and the government to admit that the attack on L.A. airport in 2002 was a terrorist operation. We had been told that personal reasons might explain why a pro-Palestinian gunman, who openly admitted the desire to kill civilians, would kill two people at an El Al counter.
The same verbal dance took place recently when an Iranian student rented a large van and tried to run down and kill as many students as possible in North Carolina. He said he was attempting to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world." But the university tried desperately to avoid the obvious T-word.
Tony Blankley wrote a Washington Times column, March 8, on the underreporting of Muslim violence. He said British politicians tell him there is increasing radical Muslim street violence, explicitly motivated by radical Islam, but not reported or characterized as such. Blankley said rioting Moroccan youths in Antwerp went on a rampage, beating up reporters and destroying cars, but police were instructed not to arrest or stop them. A database search shows little reporting on Antwerp riots.
The scary riots in Australia last December, pitting Lebanese immigrants against native whites, were well-covered. But nobody seems quite sure that we are getting the full story about other serious disturbances. From time to time the Internet carries reports of riots that don't make the newspapers, but they are mostly uncheckable.
Suppressing news, whether out of multicultural deference or fear, is a perilous business. We can't know how to react to upheavals if we aren't told about them.

Saddam, Bin Laden and Al Qaeda - Malevolent Menage a Trois
46,000 boxes of Saddam's documents, or some such number ? This is just this tip of the iceberg folks here;
Newly released papers from Saddam Hussein's ousted Iraqi government show there were discussions on Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda group, ABC News has reported.
The US government released the documents [...] showed that Bin Laden and the Taliban were in contact with Iraq and that a group of Taliban and Al Qaeda members had visited Iraq.
The document reportedly said the United States had proof the Iraqi government and "Bin Laden's group" had agreed to cooperate to carry out attacks in the United States.
The information apparently came from an Afghan consul who had heard about Iraq's relationship with "Bin Laden's group" while he was in Iran.
The report said in an editor's note the controversial claim that Osama Bin Laden was cooperating with Saddam is an ongoing matter of intense debate.

Latest Riots in France: Sowell, Steyn, Dalrymple, Socialists and Muslims
My favorite thinker, Sowell, weighs in on the decaying French...............now that's what I call a good time. In the Atlasphere (how appropriate);
To try to deal with this high unemployment rate among young workers, the job security laws have recently been modified to make it easier for employers to fire those workers who are on their first job.
That is what has French students outraged and rampaging through the
streets of Paris. They don't want employers to be able to fire them after they graduate and go to work.
Students and their political supporters, including labor unions, depict them as victims. Among the slogans chanted by the rioters is “We're not young flesh for the boss.” The fact that many bosses don't seem to want to hire their young flesh seems to be lost on them.
Hey pasaran, there is no such thing as free FROG LEGS...............
A leftist deputy has declared: “To create discrimination based on age transgresses fundamental rights!”
Channeling Ellsworth Toohey..
In other words, people have a right for other people to have to continue employing them, whether those other people want to or not. The “fundamental right” to a job over-rides the rights of other people when they are called “bosses.”
The fact that many students can think only in terms of “rights,” but not in terms of consequences, shows a major deficiency in their education. The right to a job is obviously not the same thing as a job. Otherwise there would not be a 23 percent unemployment rate among young French workers.
The law can create equal rights for inexperienced young workers and for older workers with a proven track record but the law cannot make them equally productive on the job or equally risky to hire. Nor is rioting likely to make employers any more likely to want young workers working for them.
Estimates of the damage done by the rioters — called “protesters” or “demonstrators” in the mealy-mouthed media — range from hundreds of thousands of dollars to over a million dollars, thus far. They have also shut down dozens of universities, including the Sorbonne, denying an education to other students. The heady notion of “rights” — and especially the notion that your rights over-ride other people's rights, when those other people belong to some suspect class called “bosses” — is an all too familiar feature of modern welfare state notions.
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who supports the new labor law, has seen his approval rating drop to 36 percent. That is what happens when you try to talk sense to people who prefer to believe nonsense. It is elementary economics that adding to the costs, including risks, of hiring workers tends to reduce the number of workers hired. It should not be news to anyone, whether or not they have gone to a university, that raising costs usually results in fewer transactions.
The fact that such profound ignorance of basic economics and such self-indulgent emotionalism should be prevalent at elite institutions of higher education is one of the many deep-seated failures of universities on both sides of the Atlantic.
So which drives the final stake in the heart of France, the Islamists or the Socialists? IMHO, both.
Rick O, Atlas aficionado (can I say that Rick?) scores intellectual points by pointing me to the wellspring of great discourse on the "French problem" or the "problem with the French";
Mark Steyn has focused more on the demographics of the French implosion (actually the Western civilization implosion) while Dalrymple has focused more on the cultural aspects. In any case, if you have not read what they have written you are missing some great writing and thinking.
Thanks Rick, a gift from the universe, you are.
Mark Steyn as at steynonline.com. Theodore Dalrymple writes at (among others) City Journal here. Both of them have written what I consider to be seminal articles on the death and decay of western civilization.

This week’s riots in France - blame the Muslims
But it is understood that employers will not wish to be saddled with young employees who reveal, as they most likely would, either unfitness for work, as some
young non-Muslims would, or perhaps fitness but a dangerous attitude of hostility toward non-Muslim workers, or give signs of other cause for alarm (perhaps unwillingness to do what an Infidel shop-steward, or employer, demands).
This does not mean that the rioters are Muslim. This does not mean that the law in question is prompted only by considerations of giving Muslims a chance to be hired. Yet there is an unstated but clear connection of the disruption to general understandings of what France is and what its social and economic covenant is. There is even a connection to questions about the possibility of retaining the current system of entitlements given the existence of a large, growing, and unintegrable population – a population that has been completely unscrupulous in its exploitation of the welfare state set up, paid for, administered, and maintained by Infidels who never thought that the system would be bled of resources by a discrete and hostile population. McRiots Vs. McDonald's: Franchise Battle
500,000,000 worth of capitalist property damage and counting
The new 'must work for money' rule, introduced by the French government, has precipitated huge street demonstrations in Paris, as student and labor leaders rise against the specter of capitalism, worried that its emphasis on hard work and personal responsibility will ruin their most cherished cultural values of government dependency. At the famed Sorbonne University, protesters vandalized cars, bus shelters, and shops, including a McDonald's restaurant. Rioters, crying "Vive la Révolution," absconded with a statue of Ronald McDonald and later beheaded it with a makeshift guillotine.

Cartoon Jihad: ARLA bends over, others follow
Yeah, not surprising when you glance ARLA's past and their notorious boycott of Israel. Over at Agora;
In a not-so-surprising move by Arla foods of Denmark, those of whining fame when the Battle of Khartoon first set in, Arla has launched a new advertising campaign in the Arab world. That’s not too bad in and of itself. BUT. They’ve decided to go about it by printing this statement in Arab newspapers together with TV commercials:

Arla Foods Distancing itself from the Cartoons
Statement from Arla Food.
At Arla Foods we feel that it is our duty to bring to your attention our position on
the unfortunate event which took place a few months ago. We are also addressing the conference for International Support for the Prophet to take place on March 22 and 23 2006 to explain our point of view
Arla foods distances itself from the act of Jyllands-Posten in choosing to print caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed and we do not share the newspaper’s reasons for doing so.
Having been in the Middle East for 40 years, participating as an active and integrated part of the community, we understand that you feel offended. Our presence in the region has brought us knowledge of your culture, values and your religion, Islam. This understanding has been the basis of our being able to provide you with good products of the highest quality and with the taste you demand through many years. We have built brands such as Lurpak, Puck, The Three Cows and Dano through your confidence in our products. Therefore we understand and respect your reaction, leading to the boycott of our products as a result of the irresponsible and unfortunate incident.
Clearly they capitulated;
That most fabulous Egyptian Sandmonkey in the desert reported on the inevitable "BLAME THE JOOOOS" here;
Apparently in order for Arla Foods - the producer of Lurpak and lots of danish chesse- to resume their markets and operations in the Middle East, they have to promise not to do any business with Israel - not trade goods with them, and not use their ports or anything of that nature. How messed up is that?
I don't know about you but I AM BOYCOTTNG ARLA (Lurpak, Puck, The Three Cows and Dano.) Spineless, dickless, dhimmis.

To gain contracts in Middle-East countries Danish firms have signed contracts not to trade with Israel for several years. If Danish firms have done so - which other firms from EU and the US? Arla - the Danish dairy firm - says today - that such contracts are pure routine.
Maybe the time has come to check who you are dealing with - and who you are not dealing with.My Danish friends are embarrassed. To be honest, our Israeli readers have already provided us with some inkling about this. So, I am glad it is out in the open and, hopefully, will lead to a major rethinking on the part of the companies.

Harvard and David Duke of One Mind
David Duke claims vindication by Harvard Dean.
VIDEO here American White Supremacist David Duke: Israel Makes the Nazi State Look Very Moderate
This is rich, really rich. On Friday I eviscerated Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government for their Jew hating diatribe against Israel, American Jews and the public affairs committee that lobbies to save Israel from the very real existential threat posed by her every surrounding neighbor. The paper, however, is winning unqualified support by David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Klu Klux Klan, who claims to be vindicated by a Harvard Dean. That says it all. doesn't it? Read it all in today's New York Sun
Duke, a former Louisiana state legislator and one-time Klu Klux Klan leader, called the paper “a great step forward,” but he said he was “surprised” that the Kennedy School would publish the report.”
In my post "Dhimmitude and Jew hatred at Harvard" here I wrote;
Harvard, recipient of millions in bloody Wahhabi Saudi dollars, issued an extraordinarily antisemitic paper on the American Israel public affairs committee AIPAC here
AIPAC, which is a de facto agent for a foreign government, has a stranglehold on the U.S. Congress....
I am a member of AIPAC
and I am a de facto agent? Uh uh. I am
just a girl. A
quintessentially American girl.
Just a believer in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for every
individual. Those of us that support AIPAC do so because we worry about
the existential threat to Israel.
The combination of unwavering U.S. support for Israel and the related effort to spread democracy throughout the region has inflamed Arab and Islamic opinion and jeopardized U.S. security. ... Why has the United States been willing to set aside its own security in order to advance the interests of another state?...
This is intellectually dishonest and historically inaccurate.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the most critical thing to understand about conflict in the Middle East," he told us, "is that it is not a conflict between Arab and Jew. It is a conflict between the 10th century and the 20th." More at To the Point here
Now it seems former Klu Klux Klan leader David Duke is weighing in, yes that David Duke
A paper recently co-authored by the academic dean of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government about the allegedly far-reaching influence of an “Israel lobby” is winning praise from white supremacist David Duke.
The Palestine Liberation Organization mission to Washington is distributing the paper, which also is being hailed by a senior member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization.
But the paper,“The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy,” by the Kennedy School’s Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago, is meeting with a more critical reception from many of those it names as part of the lobby. The 83-page “working paper” claims a network of journalists, think tanks, lobbyists, and largely Jewish officials have seized the foreign policy debate and manipulated America to invade Iraq. Included in this network, the authors say, are the editors of the New York Times, the scholars at the Brookings Institution, students at Columbia, “pro-Israel” senior officials in the executive branch, and “neoconservative gentiles” including columnist George Will.
“I have read about the report and read one summary already, and I am surprised how excellent it is,”he said in an e-mail.“It is quite satisfying to see a body in the premier American University essentially come out and validate every major point I have been making since even before the war even started.” Duke added that “the task before us is to wrest control of America’s foreign policy and critical junctures of media from the Jewish extremist Neocons that seek to lead us into what they expectantly call World War IV.”
Former Klu Klux Klan leader David Duke and Harvard. Intellectual equals - isn't that special?
Even Allan Dershowitz with whom I frequently diverge states the painfully obvious.
A professor at Harvard Law School, Alan Dershowitz, whom the authors call an “apologist” for Israel, said he found much of the paper to be “trash.” He said, “It could have been written by Pat Buchanan, by David Duke, Noam Chomsky, and some of the less intelligent members of Hamas. An intelligent member of Hamas would not have made these mistakes.”
Those mistakes for Mr. Dershowitz include, for example, the assertion that “There is no question, for example, that many Al Qaeda leaders, including bin Laden, are motivated by Israel’s presence in Jerusalem and the plight of the Palestinians,” which Mr. Dershowitz says “is just absurd.”
And Martin Peretz, a retired lecturer at Harvard, who is editor of The New Republic, a magazine named in the report as one of those that “zealously defend Israel at every turn,” said, “It is easier to attribute disloyalty to Jews than to question the loyalty of Islamists. This is really questioning the loyalty of Jews, that is what this is about.

University Prostituting for Islamic Petrol-Dollars, Goes After Jews
UPDATE: James Taranto of Best of the Web takes the Harvard paper down point by point. It is a must read;
Let's take these points one by one:
- Israel is weak and surrounded by enemies. To the contrary, they say, Israel is by far the strongest regional power. Further, "Egypt and Jordan have signed peace treaties with it, and Saudi Arabia has offered to do so." This gives the Saudis far too much credit. True, as we noted in 2002, then Crown Prince Abdullah (now king) told the New York Times' Thomas Friedman that he was amenable to establishing full diplomatic relations, conditioned on Israeli withdrawal from the disputed territories (occupied by Egypt and Jordan before 1967 and Israel since). But Riyadh quickly made clear that it was unwilling even to talk to Jerusalem until after such a withdrawal. As we wrote then, "The Saudi position, in other words, amounts to: Give us land now, and maybe we'll give you peace later." It is true that Israel is the regional superpower, and that Cairo and Amman have signed peace treaties with the Jewish state, but it seems undeniable--and Walt and Mearsheimer do not deny it--that none of this would be true absent U.S. support for Israel. Thus their reasoning is circular: Israel doesn't deserve U.S. support because it has received U.S. support.
- Israel is a democracy. This they concede, but they also claim that "some aspects of Israeli democracy are at odds with core American values." In particular, they claim that Arab citizens of Israel "are treated as second-class citizens" and note that "a recent Israeli government commission found that Israel behaves in a 'neglectful and discriminatory' manner towards them." Yet even acknowledging that Israeli democracy is flawed, its political system is still vastly superior to those of its adversaries. Israeli Arabs enjoy more political and civil liberties than citizens of just about any Arab country; and the only Arab lands that come anywhere close to being democracies are Lebanon, Iraq and the disputed Palestinian territories--the last two only because of American intervention. That the Israeli government criticizes its own treatment of Arabs is a testament to its democracy; can anyone imagine, say, the Saudi regime offering similar criticisms of its treatm ent of Shiites, non-Muslims or women? American democracy, too, is not without its flaws. During World War II, for instance, black Americans were still disfranchised, and innocent Japanese-Americans were rounded up and put in camps. It does not follow that America was no better than Nazi Germany.
- Jews deserve a homeland because of their past oppression. Walt and Mearsheimer go so far as to allow that Israel's creation "was undoubtedly an appropriate response to the long record of crimes against Jews." But, they say, "it also brought about fresh crimes against a largely innocent third party: the Palestinians." They lay the plight of the Palestinians entirely at Israel's door, failing to acknowledge the Arab states' vast culpability. The Arabs rejected the 1947 U.N. partition of Palestine, which would have created a Palestinian Arab state including territories beyond the present-day West Bank and Gaza strip. The Arabs immediately declared war on the nascent Jewish state--a war in which Israel gained more territory--and they waged war again in 1967 and 1973. All Arab states except Jordan refuse to allow Palestinians to become citizens, preferring to let them linger as stateless refugees. Nor do the authors acknowledge that since the creation of Israel many Jews who settled there were fle eing persecution in Arab lands and (since 1979) Iran. Whereas Israel has 1.3 million Arab citizens, no Arab country except Morocco has more than a handful of Jewish ones.
- Israel is morally superior to its adversaries. Here they cite various alleged abuses by Israel during its war of independence and claim that "Israel's subsequent conduct has often been brutal, belying any claim to moral superiority." Even if we concede all the criticisms of Israel, they do not belie "any claim to moral superiority," only to moral perfection. Evaluating which side is morally superior would require a comparative analysis; the only thing Walt and Mearsheimer say about Arab misconduct is that "the Palestinian resort to terrorism is wrong but it isn't surprising. The Palestinians believe they have no other way to force Israeli concessions." No such excuses are offered for Israel's purported misdeeds.
Walt and Mearsheimer's method of analysis presumes Israel's guilt. Every past or present Israeli transgression is evidence of its wickedness, whereas Arab ones, if they are acknowledged at all, are "understandable." This approach paints a highly misleading picture. It is anti-Semitic in effect if not in intent.

Victor Davis Hanson's Recent Comments at Berkeley
Jeremiah trekked ten rain drenched miles for a Victor Davis Hansen lecture in Berkeley. Some recollections;
Here's what the q&a brought out as to his take on America's current military commitments. (This was when I really regretted not having a recording device.) A few quotes:* "We will see things [examples of desperate, escalating, asymmetrical warfare] you won't believe in the war on terror over the next four or five years."* "A society as sophisticated as ours can take a [billions-dollar damaging] '9/11' only once about every 30 years."* "This country [the U.S.] is capable of things [military strikes] you won't believe."* He said his father often complained about America's decision to drop the A-bomb on Japan: "It was a terrible mistake, we should have dropped it earlier."* "Very bad [military] ideas can work if they're tactically sound and if people believe they can work." (Twice he stated he believes Hitler could have conquered the USSR with less of his own meddling or with different diplomatic strategies.)
Thanks Jeremiah, it's not that we weren't aware of these realities, but when articulated so precisely, it's frightening.
If any other Atlas readers were there, please share any additional
remarks you may have noted.
Bolton: UN Report card
A Report Card on Reform of the United Nations
[...] As the President has said, we do not oppose Iran enjoying the benefits of peaceful, safeguarded nuclear energy. It is clear, however, that Iran's pursuit of the nuclear fuel cycle is neither peaceful nor solely for civilian energy generation. Frankly, Iran's track record justifies this suspicion. As the resolution adopted on February 4 by the IAEA Board of Governors notes, there have been "many failures and breaches of its obligations to comply with its NPT Safeguards Agreement." Put differently, with rights come responsibilities -- responsibilities that Iran has not come close to meeting.
Our work with the international community to seek a peaceful, diplomatic resolution within the UNSC is not the only tool we will use to address this problem. In addition to our diplomatic efforts at the IAEA, the UN Security Council, and bilaterally, we are beefing up our defensive measures to cope with the Iranian nuclear threat.

General: Not Much Confidence in Iran Talks
A top commander of U.S. forces expressed doubt Sunday that negotiations between the United States and Iran over Iraq would help bring peace and stability in the Middle East.
"I don't have a lot of confidence that these will turn out to be productive, but I could be wrong," said Gen. George W. Casey, the top commander in Iraq.
"They're playing, I think, a very delicate balancing act," he said of Iran. "On the one hand, they want a stable neighbor. On the other hand, I don't believe they want to see us succeed here." hat tip Jim D

Al-Kubeisi: "I cannot talk about the jihad when the world considers a plundering occupier to be a man of peace, and the owner of the occupied land to be a terrorist. The world demands today from anyone whose land has been occupied – but only from among the Muslims – that they shut up. Bush and Rumsfeld on Iraq: Kickin' Ass, Taking Names, Fighting the Great Fight
Rumsfeld: Abandoning Iraq now would be the equivalent of handing Germany back to the Nazis.
Rumsfeld also noted that the Iraqi security forces have been growing stronger, more capable and more responsible, and Iraq is becoming a nation that "will not attack its neighbours, will not conspire with terrorists, will not pay rewards to the families of suicide bombers and will not seek to kill Americans."
For these reasons, the U.S. must maintain its commitment to Iraq until the work is completed, Rumsfeld wrote.
"Though there are those who will never be convinced that the cause in Iraq is worth the costs, anyone looking realistically at the world today -- at the terrorist threat we face -- can come to only one conclusion: Now is the time for resolve, not retreat." More here
Rumsfeld quoted what he said were the words of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his associates expressing worry over the situation in Iraq, saying "Time is not on our side," and "Morale is down."

UN envoy: It's all the Jews' fault
Basta! The UN must go the way of the league of nations. The prejudice against the West and its blatant anitsemitism has infected the whole of the UN body and rendered it incapable of achieving any good. It is a terrorist enabling arm.
Almost completely disregarding Palestinian Arab aggression against Israel's Jews, a United Nations envoy has sought to lay the blame for regional conflict at the doorstep of the Jewish state by misrepresenting and exaggerating Israel's defensive measures and isolated acts of frustration.
In a special report prepared for next week's annual meeting of the UN Human Rights Commission, South African lawyer John Dugard charged:
"It seems that settlers are able to terrorize Palestinians and destroy their trees and crops with impunity."
What he failed to mention, however, are the innumerable stoning, shooting and bombing attacks carried out against the Jewish settlers by the hostile Arab population surrounding them. Often those attacks are launched from the cover of olive groves and fruit orchards, prompting frustrated and threatened Israelis to take matters into their own hands.
Dugard also criticized official Israeli defensive measures both in Gaza and the "West Bank." Story here
HAMAS has
formed a government with no moderates in it. Theyhave refused to renounce
their vow to destroy Israel and have refused to adhere to or respect previous

The violent Hamas government must be met with crippling economic sanctions. The World Bank has warned these sanctions would devastate poverty-stricken Palestinian territories but it doesn't have to be this way. Bread lines are already beginning to form. Belzer Proclaims He Knows Better About Iraq than Uneducated Soldiers in Iraq
[Be advised that this item includes accurate quotations of vulgarities.] When Congresswoman Ileanna Ros-Lehtinen contended Friday night, on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, that servicemen she's met in Iraq are “saying 'we're proud of our mission, we know what we're doing over here. We don't want you guys in Washington to lose it over there,'” actor/comedian Richard Belzer condescendingly fired back, claiming that to “ask them” is “bullshit” since, apparently unlike him, “they don't read twenty newspapers a day.” Ros-Lehtinen cited the knowledge of her Marine officer stepson, but Belzer, who plays “Detective John Munch” on NBC's Law & Order: SVU, retorted: “Doesn't mean he's a brilliant scholar about the war because he's there.” A quite agitated Ros-Lehtinen sputtered: "Oh, you are though! You are though? Okay." To which Belzer affirmed: "Well I have more time...” Host Bill Maher interjected that Belzer's point was that a 19-year-old is in the army “because he probably couldn't find other employment." The Republican Congresswoman from Florida countered that her stepson is a college graduate, leading Belzer to snidely denigrate the military: "You think everyone over there is a college graduate? They're 19 and 20-year-old kids who couldn't get a job.”
Ros-Lehtinen mocked him: "Yeah, you know because you've been there." Belzer rudely lashed back: "What, I don't fucking read!? Don't do that!" He went on to argue: "It's this patronizing thing that people have about if you're against the war everyone's lumped together. You know, the soldiers are not scholars, they're not war experts." That was too much for host Bill Maher: "You're going to lose even me...”
