New UN Document Refutes Palestinian Claims

 

If carefully reviewed, this report has widespread implications for the Arab-Israeli conflict. While the UN is eager to condemn Israel for violating Palestinian rights, its own data suggests otherwise. The data disputes Palestinian claims that they are suffering as a result of a harsh Israeli military occupation. On the contrary, the Palestinians have actually benefited from their association with the State of Israel and their difficulties are the result of self-inflicted wounds. Palestinian problems stem from their intolerance, hostility, violence, and corruption, not from Israeli occupation. Those in the world who are concerned about the "plight of the Palestinian refugees" should carefully review this report. They may want to reconsider their support for establishing a Palestinian state. Two other reports from the UNDP, the Arab Human Development Report 2004, and HDR 2004, also raise serious questions regarding the wisdom of establishing a Palestinian State in lands currently controlled by Israel.

The mammoth 372 page report is titled Human Development Report 2005: International cooperation at a crossroads. The introductory material notes that 2.5 billion people in the world, which is 40% of the world's population, are living on less than $2 per day. About half of that population, 20% of humanity, is living on less than $1 per day (p.4, 24). The report emphasizes the significance of violent conflict as a barrier to progress: "Conflict undermines nutrition and public health, destroys education systems, devastates livelihoods, and retards prospects for economic growthPart of the challenge posed by human insecurity and violent conflict can be traced to weak, fragile, and failing states. Compounded failures to protect people against security risks, to provide for basic needs and to develop political institutions perceived as legitimate are standing features of conflict-prone states." (p.12). The report observes that in 2003 there were 29 ongoing violent conflicts, down from 51 in 1991. In Sudan alone, the conflict has claimed two million lives and displaced 6 million people (p.153). Yet the focus of world sympathy and concern seems to be directed towards 3 million Arabs living in Israeli territories who are receiving the highest amount of aid in the world on a per capita basis.

span face="Arial">Delegates of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), meeting in Orlando this past week, passed an anti-Israel resolution titled “Peace Not Walls: Stand for Justice in the Holy Land.” The delegates were attending the Churchwide Assembly, ELCA’s chief legislative authority.

In anticipation of the vote, CAMERA sponsored an advertisement in USA Today (the newspaper given to guests at the hotel which hosted the Assembly ) calling on delegates to oppose the resolution on the grounds that it was based on materially inaccurate and biased information.

Earlier CAMERA had been in touch with ELCA concerning similarly biased and inaccurate anti-Israel articles in the church’s magazine.

While in the end an amended version of the resolution passed by a vote of 668 to 269, many delegates and lay members of the church seemed unhappy with the proceedings.

According to an article in The Weekly Standard by an ELCA member, the fact that as many as 269 delegates voted against the resolution “suggested that many rank and file church members were rebelling against the national organization’s fait accompli.”

(The Weekly Standard article, by John Hinderaker, also cited CAMERA’s work in debunking many of ELCA’s anti-Israel allegations.)

Further evidence for delegates’ unhappiness with the anti-Israel vote was a proposed amendment that garnered significant support (it was defeated 565 – 369) calling for the title of the resolution to omit the phrase “Peace Not Walls.” Don Lamprecht, a voting member of the Alaska Synod, spoke in favor of this change on the grounds that it would be “more neutral” and “less inflammatory.”

Another amendment, which passed 571– 335, changed the resolution from saying that Israel’s “separation wall or barrier would undermine efforts toward a credible two-state solution” to read that it “may undermine...”

Most importantly, a motion presented the next day urging the Assembly to reconsider its favorable vote on “Peace Not Walls: Stand for Justice in the Holy Land” was narrowly voted down by 451 – 376, suggesting only tepid support for the anti-Israel resolution.

GAZA FACTS -Atlas

21 Settlements
The disengagement will remove 1,700 families from their homes, most against their will. Many families have lived in that region for three generations. In addition to the Gaza settlements, four Northern West Bank communities will also be removed.

$1.7 Billion
The disengagement will cost a total of $1.7 Billion, which represents a cost of approximately $260 for each Israeli citizen.

$120 Million
Produce and flowers exported by Israeli farmers in Gaza is a $120 Million per year business. Israeli farmers in Gaza produce 60% of cherry tomatoes, 60% of herbs, and 70% of all organic produce exports for the entire country. The move out of Gaza will virtually extinguish this economic resource.

About 5,000 Palestinians worked in the Erez industrial zone and another 5,000 performed agricultural work in the Jewish settlements of Gush Katif. It is likely that these workers will now lose their jobs.

In 1946 with the encouragement of Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, Kfar Darom was established. It was evacuated in 1948 following an Egyptian siege, then resettled in 1970. A Jewish presence in Gaza dates back to biblical times.

All of these 5,000 school-age children will have to move away from their family homes and childhood friends. All of their schools will also be closed. In the Gaza Strip, this includes:

• 7 elementary schools
• 3 high schools
• 42 daycare centers

 

As the world's attention is diverted [diverted? as opposed to what? focusing on terror attacks on jews - an act of peace is a diversion? At stake is the very basis of peace between Palestinians and Israelis - a negotiated two-state solution. [two states takes two......get it?]Israel's plan is to use "concessions" [WHAT'S UP WITH THE QUOTES?] in Gaza to remove Jerusalem from the negotiation table. But without Jerusalem as a shared capital for Palestinians and Israelis, there is no two-state solution. [says you? pishhhhhhhhhhaw when was that decided? where? who?]

 

In violation of President George W. Bush's May warning not to prejudice the status of Jerusalem [I have seen no evidence of Bush warning Israel of anything. Israel and the US have been staunch allies and it is because of the trust between Bush and Sharon that the disengagement is taking place] , the Israeli cabinet recently approved a decision to complete Israel's wall in East Jerusalem by the end of August, while the world's attention is on the Gaza disengagement. The wall, which Israel is using to redefine Jerusalem's borders, is being routed through occupied territory in such a way as to maximize the number of Palestinian Jerusalemites behind the wall, while maximizing the amount of Palestinian land on the "Israeli" side. About 55,000 Palestinian residents of Jerusalem will be effectively cut off from the their city, forced to access their schools, hospitals and even families through Israeli military gates which, as Palestinians know from experience, can be closed at a soldier's whim. [oh puhleeze, the Palis will destroy Jerusalem and all of the centuries old holy  sites, they have done it already in Bethlehem. Christians won't even make the pilgrimage there anymore. The Israelis are building SECURE BORDERS. SECURE BARRIERS. Get it? The open porous borders allowed the Pali terrorists and Islamic Jihadists to murder and attack Jews at will .BASTA!]

These Palestinian Christians and Muslims will be denied free access to the holy sites in their own city. [oh and we know how much they respect holy sites. Remember when the Palis took the Church of the Nativity?  Stormed, took hostage, and urinated/defecated on it. Just one  example of their  assault on Manger Square. In the past, the terror-supporting Muslim Waqf organization, backed by a local Muslim rabble have been the main attackers of this most holy of places for Christianity. The Waqf has been trying for years to build a mosque right on top of the Place where billions believe Jesus was born, and only Israel has been preventing this religious piracy and defending Christianity's interests. At the same time, many Christian residents of the Palestinian territories are under constant attack and are victims of religious persecution at the hands of their Muslim neighbors]

UPDATE on pullout: August 11

In a special address to the nation Wednesday, President Moshe Katsav turned to Gaza and northern West Bank would-be evacuees and apologized for removing them from their homes:

• On behalf of the State of Israel, I ask you, the settlers, for forgiveness, over the demand that you leave after dozens of years of construction and victims.
• We know your settling in the territories was an act of conscience that was also carried out in accordance with Israeli government decisions. You have established thriving settlements and raised generations of children and youth who glorify Israel.
• We are in awe of how you have heroically faced the dangers - the thousands of bombs, Kassam rockets, and terror attacks. You have risked your families' and your own lives for the ideal and faith, and you have known pain and bereavement.
• After a year of hard-fought battles and intense deliberations - the time has come. You must respect the authorities' decisions.
• You must save your strength for the battles that are awaiting us. Even those who support the pullout realize the real fight is over the eastern border.

The state of Israel - which, the last time I checked, was both a foreign and a sovereign nation - wants the American taxpayers to cough up $2.2 billion in addition to our regular $3 billion-or-so annual subsidy to pay for the withdrawal from Gaza.

Unless the American people raise hell about this, it's a done deal. In Washington, whatever Israel wants, Israel gets.[oh really? is that why Israel is tearing itself apart, teetering on gross civil unrest because she "gets what she wants?"  This, dear readers, is Jew hating at its very best- Atlas] Nevertheless, there are several reasons why the American people should rebel at the latest brazen attack on our treasury by Israel and its American supporters.
First, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon decided unilaterally to withdraw from Gaza. This was in lieu of following the president's peace plan, which Sharon has ignored from the very beginning. Where is it written, on stone or parchment or paper, that the head of a foreign government can decide to do something unilaterally and automatically send the bill to the American taxpayers? We will derive no benefits at all from the withdrawal. [are they nuts ?- Atlas]

Livingstone: Likud is like Hamas

London Mayor Ken Livingstone, whose city was devastated by Islamic suicide bombings earlier in the month, lashed out at Israel Tuesday, comparing the Likud to Hamas and accusing Israel of "crimes against humanity."

At a London press conference, Livingstone, who has a long record of anti-Israeli diatribes, drew a connection between the London blasts and the Middle East. He said Israel had "done horrendous things which border on crimes against humanity in the way they have indiscriminately slaughtered men, women and children in the West Bank and Gaza for decades."

Livingstone expressed understanding for the motivations of Palestinian suicide bombers, saying that since the "Palestinians don't have jet fighters, they only have their bodies to use as weapons. In that unfair balance, that's what people use."

Pamela aka Atlas thinks comparisons between the twin bombings in London and Israel must be made. I am sick and tired of people telling us what we should think, how we must think and dismissing homicide bombings out of hand with the most pathetic excuses.

What we really need to do is declare War in Radical Islam as they have declared war on us. What we need to do is top calling it "a war on terror", thats like calling WWII a war on bombs or guns or missiles or whatever........say what it is.

Dare we compare the two terrorist attacks?

Yes, we must.

Any time innocents are targeted for death by Muslim extremists we must search for both similar and dissimilar patterns. Compare and contrast. It makes us smarter, more competent to fight this uphill battle against terrorists.
The ultimate end goal of the terrorist remains the same - annihilation of the West, it remains to us, the West, their intended victims, to complicate their means, to put obstacles in the way of their modus operandi.

Both in London and in Netanya, the bombers were young males, they were suicide bombers.

In Netanya, the bomber digressed from his original plan. He felt threatened, felt the eyes of security personnel trained upon him and hit the switch while still a distance away from his intended target. He murdered innocents, but fewer than he would have had he been inside, not outside, a busy shopping area.

In London, the eyes of security cameras were open and watching, but the terrorists went about their business as planned. The bombers have all been captured on tape, and must have known that they would be, but none of the four aborted their missions because they were being observed.

In the pursuit against terrorists, technology is crucial, but it is not nearly as menacing as the human factor.
There is no way to convince the Islamic extremist bent on mass murder to mend his or her ways. 

There's more hate being disseminated everyday, everywhere, in every nook and cranny of Western society. Cut out this cancer:

The war against terrorism will not be won in our time in any case. Terrorism is the contemporary form of violent conflict, as major wars have become too costly and conflict won't disappear from the face of the earth in the foreseeable future. Terrorists cannot exist in a vacuum; they need a periphery of helpers. But politicians are reluctant to press the point by strongly admonishing Europe's Muslims to do their civic duty and cooperate in finding the terrorists. As long as it is not generally understood that restrictions and controls will be inevitable in the future to safeguard society from far worse disasters, terrorists will have a (relatively) free run.
