Israel Offers Hundreds of Doctors, Trauma Specialists, and Natural Disaster Experts. American Jewish Groups Mobilizing.
New York, September 1, 2005 … “We note with appreciation the offers of the Government of Israel to provide aid and assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” said Conference of Presidents Chairman Harold Tanner and Executive Vice Chairman Malcolm Hoenlein. “Israel has offered hundreds of doctors, nurses, technicians, and experts in trauma natural disasters and public health, whose expertise was developed by virtue of Israel’s own experiences. Israel has also offered field hospitals, medical kits, equipment for temporary housing, and other assistance. The Israeli government has offered these teams and equipment on just 24 hours notice.
“We note that Prime Minister Sharon has written to President Bush, as has Foreign Minister Shalom to Secretary Rice, offering condolences on the loss of life and destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. Prime Minister Sharon pledged to President that ‘the people of Israel stand firmly by your side in a show of solidarity and friendship.’ The immediate response reflects that the people of Israel identify with the American people and the heavy toll taken by this natural disaster, and like their government, are seeking ways to assist.”
Fundraising efforts, including a drive by the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, which has set up a special campaign, have been initiated to show solidarity and sympathy for those who have suffered so much. Under the theme, “Now It Is Our Turn To Help Them,” the newspaper is collecting funds on its website, www.haaretz.com and by mail.
The American Jewish community has been mobilizing to provide assistance as well, and there are a number of mailboxes and websites that have been established to which funds can be directed either online or by mail. Among them are:
- American Jewish Committee, www.ajc.org or AJC Hurricane Katrina Fund, 165
East 56th Street, New York, NY 10022, attn: Ms.

- B’nai B’rith International, www.bnaibrith.org or B’nai B’rith Disaster Relief Fund, 2020 K Street, NW, Seventh Floor, Washington, DC 20006

- United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, www.uscj.org or USCJ Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund, 121 Congressional Lane, Suite 210, Rockville, MD 20852
Tanner and Hoenlein said, “We have expressed our condolences and offers of support to the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. We urge all our members to respond generously to the tragedy that has devastated the Gulf region and will require immediate and longer-term assistance to rebuild lives and communities.”
