Aegis Missile Intercept Test (02-24-05)
A Standard Missile - 3 (SM-3) is launched from the USS Lake Erie (CG 70) in the latest Missile Defense Agency, U.S. Navy test of its sea-based ballistic missile defense program. The SM-3 intercepted a short range ballistic missile target, launched minutes earlier from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. The intercept, the fifth in the last six attempts, occurred approximately 100 miles from Kauai.
A friend of mine emailed me these photos that his friend took onboard the Aegis BMD cruiser USS Lake Erie during the missile test. The email said it was the "first" photo's taken. I was able to locate the photo on the right here, but I have not been able to locate the one on the left. Maybe he's right? The photo on the left was taken seconds before the photo on the right. Enjoy and God Bless our men and women in uniform!
Either way, they're still cool! I have a couple more that I'll get up tomorrow.
